Nebraska has 93 counties covering 76,824 square miles and roughly 1,979,558 residents. The state was admitted to the Union in 1867 as the 37th state, and the current county boundaries reflect more than a century of administrative subdivision.

The largest county by land area is Cherry County at 5,960 square miles, home to about 8,198 residents. The most populous is Douglas County with approximately 591,749 residents — a density of about 1,804 people per square mile.

At the other end of the scale, Blaine County has only about 336 residents.

Nebraska’s capital is Lincoln, while the largest city is Omaha — a common pattern in the United States, where many states placed their capitals in smaller, more central towns rather than their largest commercial hubs.
