How many counties does Pennsylvania have?
Pennsylvania has 67 counties covering 44,743 square miles and roughly 13,018,637 residents. The state was admitted to the Union in 1787 as the 2nd state, and the current county boundaries reflect more than a century of administrative subdivision.
The largest county by land area is Lycoming County at 1,229 square miles, home to about 119,460 residents. The most populous is Philadelphia County with approximately 1,580,199 residents — a density of about 11,793 people per square mile.
At the other end of the scale, Cameron County has only about 4,388 residents.
Pennsylvania’s capital is Harrisburg, while the largest city is Philadelphia — a common pattern in the United States, where many states placed their capitals in smaller, more central towns rather than their largest commercial hubs.
