How many counties does Ohio have?

Ohio has 88 counties covering 40,861 square miles and roughly 11,810,293 residents. The state was admitted to the Union in 1803 as the 17th state, and the current county boundaries reflect more than a century of administrative subdivision.

The largest county by land area is Ashtabula County at 702 square miles, home to about 97,097 residents. The most populous is Franklin County with approximately 1,324,154 residents — a density of about 2,489 people per square mile.

At the other end of the scale, Monroe County has only about 11,656 residents.

Columbus is both the state capital and the largest city in Ohio.
